The South Jersey Emerging Journalists Project (SJEJP) is the next chapter in a vital mission that began in 2020. Originally founded as the South Jersey Information Equity Project (SJIEP) at Montclair State University’s Center for Cooperative Media, the initiative was created to amplify underrepresented voices and promote equitable storytelling in local media.

In 2025, our work received the NAACP Excellence in Communication Award, honoring the project’s transformative impact across South Jersey communities. This milestone celebrated the dedication of our founding leadership team and marked a pivotal moment in our continued growth and evolution.  

Now operating as an independent organization under the leadership of Executive Director Velvet S. McNeil, SJEJP continues to build on its original mission, empowering communities through inclusive storytelling, while embracing new opportunities for collaboration and growth.

A new partnership with Temple University’s Center for Community-Engaged Media will further strengthen our connection with residents and audiences across the region, fostering deeper dialogue and participation in local journalism.

 Since our founding, SJEJP’s work has been grounded in research, community town halls, and strategic collaborations that ensure our programs reflect the needs and voices of South Jersey residents. In the year ahead, we’re expanding our reach to amplify more stories, elevate emerging talent, and deepen our community impact.
